A LEARNER motorcyclist reached speeds up to 170kmh during a police chase along Camperdown's main street on Thursday evening.
The 19-year-old Warrnambool man sped through a 60kmh zone with police in pursuit.
It was the second high-speed chase in two nights.
Leading Senior Constable Dave Dickson, of the Colac Traffic Management Unit (TMU), described the speeding motorists as ``an extreme concern''. ``These kids aren't bad kids. They just do stupid things.''
In the latest incident, Colac TMU noticed the motorcyclist's erratic riding prior to Camperdown when he was travelling in company with a utility at 8.25pm. Senior Constable Dickson said officers intercepted the ute but the motorcyclist ``took off'', travelling at high speed in the built-up area.
``The chase was abandoned a short time after,'' Senior Constable Dickson said.
The man, who was riding a ``rather large and very new'' motorcycle, later surrendered himself to the Camperdown Police Station.
One Camperdown man who witnessed the chase said he could not believe the speeds involved.
``I've never seen a vehicle go through Camperdown before at that speed.
``There was no siren. It was only lights. I just think that is just so dangerous.
``Instead of one man risking one life on a motorbike, the police risked tens of people's lives with the way they acted. It was just lunacy.''
Senior Constable Dickson said the police car had its lights and sirens operating. He said the actual speed, which he was not able to comment on, probably sounded faster.
